He recognized the need for order and wholeness on one side and at the same time the need for openness to chaos and adaptability on the other side. Cohesion, holding it all together, was created through a collective purpose supported by collective principles. Out of this, the system organised itself in multiple ways in pursuit of joint purpose and shared principles.

Chaordic Principles

These insights come from Dee Hock. the founding father of VISA, an extremely successful worldwide organisation completely based on principles of self-organization and self-governance. VISA is now the world's largest retail electronic payments network, connecting consumers, businesses, financial institutions and governments in more than 200 countries and territories, non-stock, and profit oriented, cooperating and competing in the same business model sharing more than US$ 4.8 trillion transactions every year. 

He invented the word Chaordic: "The behaviour of any self-governing organism, organization or system which harmoniously blends characteristics of order and chaos, patterned in a way dominated by neither chaos nor order. Characteristic of the fundamental organizing principles of evolution and nature."
